Mission:
Massachusetts Advocates for children’s Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative works with schools to create warm, welcoming safe and supportive environments where trauma-sensitivity is a regular part of the way schools are run.
Vision:
Massachusetts Advocates for Children is a private non-profit organization dedicated to being an independent and effective voice for children who face significant barriers to equal educational and life opportunities. MAC works to overcome these barriers by changing conditions for many children, while also helping one child at a time.
Approach:
MAC Listens
MAC starts at the ground level, carefully reviewing nearly 1,000 helpline calls per year, providing individual case advocacy, and meeting with key stakeholders to understand the barriers that children face in education.
MAC Acts
Actions speak louder. After MAC has determined priorities for systemic advocacy, it works tirelessly to organize its parent and professional networks. With their help, MAC advocates for reform that improves educational opportunities for children.
MAC Follows Through
The work is never done. MAC’s persistence ensures that laws are followed and that children’s rights are protected, and its multi-strategic approach to advocacy changes conditions for many children, while also helping one child at a time.
Impact:
TLPI has successfully advocated for many laws, policies and funding streams, including the Safe and Supportive Schools Framework, an omnibus law designed to set the conditions for all Massachusetts schools to become trauma-sensitive environments.
